British Values

At Rosecliffe Spencer Academy the children enjoy a rich, inclusive curriculum that is enjoyable, exciting and well matched to children’s needs so that they are appropriately challenged.

The learning we have planned in each year group ensures that the requirements associated with the national curriculum are fully met and often exceeded. We work hard to ensure that these learning experiences are creative, engaging and active because we recognise the importance of ensuring that learning is purposeful and relevant to our children’s lives. Wherever possible, opportunities to use and apply learning in a meaningful context are regularly provided. This nourishes every child’s emotional and social development enabling them to develop their self-knowledge, self-esteem and self-confidence, as well as securing the highest levels of achievement.

Our ethos promotes the development of vital life skills that will ensure our children are well placed to do well in the next phase of their education and beyond. Relationships are key to our ethos with our core principles driving and shaping every aspect of life at Rosecliffe Spencer Academy!

The values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs are promoted across the school through the delivery of our curriculum and specific sessions to develop pupils’ social and emotional understanding through the following ways:

Democracy

Children have many opportunities for their voices to be heard.   They are always listened to by adults and are taught to listen carefully and with concern to each other, respecting the right of every individual to have their opinions and voices heard.

Children also have the opportunity to air their opinions and ideas through our School Council. The elections of the School Council members are based solely on pupil votes, reflecting our British electoral system and demonstrating democracy in action.

The Rule of Law

The importance of laws, whether they are those that govern the class, the school or the country, are consistently reinforced. We have three school rules, which are deeply embedded in our work every day:

  • Ready
  • Respectful
  • Safe

Our children are taught the value and reasons behind the school rules, that they are our way of life and there for our well-being, the responsibilities that this involves and the consequences when rules are broken.

Individual Liberty

At Rosecliffe Spencer Academy, children are actively encouraged to make choices, knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment. As an academy, we educate and provide boundaries for our children to make choices safely, through the provision of a safe environment and an empowering education.

Our children are encouraged to know, understand and exercise their rights and personal freedoms and are advised how to exercise these safely; examples of this can be seen in our e-safety and Jigsaw lessons. Whether it is through choice of challenge; of how they record; of participation in our extra- curricular activities in the future; our children are given the freedom to make choices.

Tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs

Rosecliffe Spencer Academy we recognise the importance of ensuring that our pupils have frequent opportunities to learn about the diversity seen in the wider community.

Assemblies are regularly planned to include stories and celebrations from a variety of faiths and cultures.  Our teaching of RE and PSHCE also supports this.  Through this, our children gain an enhanced understanding of their place in a culturally diverse society.
